An Illustration Student's Compilation

This is a spread of all of the major projects I had this semester in my fashion illustration class. Really helpful class that now looking back, gave great practice of drawing from the model and experimenting with mediums. The first two assignments were based on articles.

(Top right) Spot Illustration for an article discussing the Most Expensive Retail Locations. I based my concept on the Avenue de Champs-Elysees in Paris, France moving up in rank on the list as London's Bond St. moved lower on the list. I represented Paris as the Arc de Triomphe (a boot [stepping on]) and London as Big Ben (broken toy). Done in gouache.

(Top right and bottom right) are based on an article about the rise and fall of the sun tan, an article from Flaunt Magazine. One is pro tan, on is against tanning. I love exaggerating hair, using the head as a platform to exaggerate (can be found a lot in fashion illustrators). I wanted to push that more than anything while executing the key points. I hope you can guess which reps the concepts they belong to.

Finally,
Final projects were based on a celebrity personality. I LOVED doing this one because my muse was Prince, one of my favorite artists. I admire Prince as a musician and how mysterious and really deep this guy is! I chose to use doves to symbolize him, If you're thinking of "When Doves Cry" good, but that was only the half of the concept. I've used "the love symbol" that he went by solely in the 90's to frame his body and played with opacity and layers in photoshop after rendering this piece traditionally in gouache and acrylic.

More to come.

Home Again

My name is Sara Jean-Baptiste. I'm a 21 year old artist residing in Brooklyn, NY.

I have been a lifelong artist-- in mind, body and spirit. I have been passionate about art since I was a kid-- drawing people from life, taking student projects extremely serious to going to art school on and off. I attended LaGuardia High School where I majored in art, finally got a chance to experience dedicated art classes. After switching back to an all academic high school and graduating, I knew I had to choose to dedicate myself to learning more about art.

I graduated form the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, majoring in Illustration where I had  amazing influences by the likes of Bil Donovan, Joe Denaro, Karen Santry, Carlos Aponte and John Jay Cobaoy- these professors and working illustrators have helped me grow into the relm of stylization-- influencing my work into conveying fashion illustration.

I'm usually drawing on the train, volunteering to work a local event as an artist for hire to do live portraits, taking on portrait commissions and drawing characters I create inside of my own head.

Check out my work-- updates on what I'm up to and explore some of my design talents on this blog.
